Uber Kicked Out of London, Declared “Unfit”

Soon, Londoners who rely on Uber may have to find a different way home from the pub at night. That’s because the city has decided that Uber is unfit to operate a taxi company, and when its license expires at the end of September, it won’t be renewed.

Reuters reports that Uber plans to appeal the decision. The good news for the approximately 40,000 drivers who work for Uber is, London will still allow the ride-share service to operate until its appeals are exhausted. That process could take several months. Still, it sounds like the city is pretty committed to kicking Uber out.

“Uber’s approach and conduct demonstrate a lack of corporate responsibility in relation to a number of issues which have potential public safety and security implications,” Transport for London, the city’s transportation authority, said in a statement. Specifically, TfL takes issue with Uber’s criminal reporting practices, the thoroughness of its background checks, and its use of a program called Greyball that prevents authorities from monitoring the app.

The company, of course, disagrees with London’s decision. “Transport for London and the Mayor have caved in to a small number of people who want to restrict consumer choice,” said Tom Elvidge, Uber’s general manager in London. “We intend to immediately challenge this in the courts.”
