Mazda has revealed updates for the CX-9, its largest crossover, which can seat up to seven passengers. For the 2018 model year, all CX-9s now come standard with low speed automatic emergency braking that works up to 19 mph, blind spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert. The G-Vectoring Control system, which ever so slightly reduces the engine’s torque to put more weight on the front wheels to improve the vehicle’s cornering and steering is now standard on all CX-9s as well.
Higher trim levels also get heated second row seats and the full suite of active safety features are now available as standard on upper grades or as an option on lower ones. Soul Red Crystal, an exterior color that debuted on the 2017 CX-5, replaces Soul Red Metallic on the 2018 CX-9.
The four trim levels return for the 2018 CX-9 with the base Sport trim starting at $33,070 including destination, an increase of $610 over last year’s starting price. Opting for all-wheel drive bumps the CX-9’s price by $1,800. Standard features on the Sport trim include cloth upholstery, LED headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels, the MazdaConnect infotainment system, a 7.0-inch touchscreen, Bluuetooth connectivity, and a rearview camera. You can also now opt for active safety features in the Sport trim with the Sport package, which includes lane departure warning, high beam assist, lane keeping assist, automatic emergency braking for higher speeds, heated front seats, and full-speed adaptive cruise control.
Mid-level Touring models add keyless entry, an 8.0-inch touchscreen, leather upholstery, and a power front passenger seat. The Touring Premium package adds LEG foglights, navigation, a 12-speaker Bose premium audio system, front parking sensors, retractable sunshades and a moonroof. Grand Touring variants get 20-inch alloy wheels, adaptive headlights, aluminum interior trim, a head-up display, heated second-row seats and a heated steering wheel. At the top of the CX-9 range is the Signature trim, which comes standard with all-wheel drive and has features exclusive to it like Auburn Nappa leather upholstery, rosewood interior trim by guitar maker Fujigen, and LED signature grille lighting.
All 2018 Mazda CX-9s come standard with a 2.5-liter turbo-four rated at 250 hp on premium fuel or 227 hp on regular fuel and 310 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed automatic is the only transmission available. EPA fuel economy ratings are 22/28 mpg city/highway for front-drive models and 20/26 mpg with all-wheel drive.
