This month we have the opportunity to have a much more detailed look at the Mexican market. March figures for now, a full First Quarter update with full references to 2014 figures. Different methodologies from ADMA mean the Nissan Pickup now ranks #8. Great gainers in March include the Nissan X-Trail up 6-fold on a year ago to #11, the Chevrolet Matiz up 151% to #12, the Mazda3 up 125% to #15, Ram Pickup up 54% to #21, Nissan Frontier up 38% to #25, Honda Fit (now produced locally) up 642% to #28, Honda City up 283% to #29 and the Mazda2 (now domestically assembled) up 176% to #43.
Two nameplates deserve a specific paragraph on their own. Firstly the Dodge Attitude. Born as a rebadged Hyundai Accent that had to be ditched when Hyundai entered the Mexican market last year, the Dodge Attitude is now a rebadged Mitsubishi Attrage. And it suits it well, because sales of the nameplate literally take off over the past year: from 39 units in March 2014 to 869 this month and 1903 year-to-date. Secondly, the VW Golf, which used to be moribund nameplate in Mexico, is now making a name for itself now that Mexican car buyers are on the hunt for more sophisticated options in the market. Golf March sales go from a lonely four units in 2014 to 529 this month, earning the nameplate a spot in the Top 50 at #46.
