It’s no running-and-driving Lego Technic Bugatti Chiron, but Chevy’s life-size 2019 Silverado 1500 LT Trail Boss made entirely of Lego bricks is one impressive project. Built as part of the brand’s partnership with The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, and in cooperation with Ralph Waldo Emerson Elementary school in Detroit through the school’s A World in Motion Program, the truck built out of the plastic bricks is a phenomenal sculpture that’s not only the right size, but actually looks like the real-life item.
What, you may be asking yourself, does a pickup like the Silverado have to do with either Lego or a movie aimed at kids? “The themes of determination and teamwork in the new movie align perfectly with our Chevy brand values,” said Sandor Piszar, director of Chevrolet Truck marketing. “And we are sure that the all-new Silverado has the features, technologies, and strength that would help Emmet, Lucy, and their friends as they take on exciting new challenges.” We’re also sure it had nothing to do with publicizing their truck (which worked, by the way).
The build’s statistics are just as impressive as the final result. It took 18 specially trained Lego Master Builders more than 2,000 hours to select and place each of the 334,544 plastic pieces. The most commonly used brick in the build? The red 2×8 stud. That massive quantity of bricks translates to a model pickup that’s 6 feet high, 8 feet wide, and 20 feet long, and which weighs in at 3,307 pounds—a seriously stout figure for a plastic model, but still nearly a ton shy of the real thing.
The model was assembled in the Lego Group’s model shop in Enfield, Connecticut, before making its debut at the 2019 Detroit Auto Show. Look for a custom mini-build of the Chevy Silverado High Country when The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part makes its debut in theaters on February 8.
