Watch: 7 Reasons Why the 2019 Mercedes G-Wagen Is Better Than the Old

Mercedes brought out the original G-Class in 1979, and it was to become one of the most capable off-road vehicles on the market. For the first time in 40 years, Mercedes is reinventing the G, but that’s not a bad thing. It turns out the G-Wagen is even more capable than before, not to mention much more modern.

More interior space, a new independent front suspension, and a new transmission are just some of the improvements. The 2019 Mercedes G-Wagen will be available in a few different flavors, and each has their own strengths. As we wrote in our 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class First Drive, the G 550 is the more balanced option. “Hardly a slouch off the line in its previous form, the new G 550’s brisk acceleration belies its cinderblock aerodynamics. The nine-speed shifts quickly and transparently, always choosing the right gear, and in sport mode it improves performance by holding gears longer, delivering rev-matched downshifts backed up by a lovely V-8 soundtrack.”

The G 63 has the power advantage, however. “Even when not on the gas, this hand-built V-8 feels fast; with its 627-lb-ft of torque available low in the rev band, the AMG gets moving at a good clip without really having to try. The sport-oriented G 63’s steering is low on effort like the G 550’s, but high on feel.”
