Fiat Chrysler is recalling 4.8 million vehicles in the U.S. because cruise control functionality could be compromised in a certain unlikely situation. The automaker advises drivers of the affected Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram vehicles to avoid using cruise control until they receive a software upgrade.
The Problem: If a certain electrical network happens to short-circuit while the vehicle is accelerating in cruise control mode, drivers may not be able to cancel cruise control. However, FCA says drivers can still brake to override acceleration from the cruise control system. Shifting into neutral and braking accordingly will also stop the vehicle. The vehicle will cancel cruise control once it has been placed in Park.
FCA is not aware of any injuries or accidents involving the affected vehicles, which include:
- 2015-17 Chrysler 200 sedan
- 2014-18 Chrysler 300 sedan
- 2017-18 Chrysler Pacifica minivan
- 2015-18 Dodge Challenger coupe
- 2014-18 Dodge Charger sedan
- 2014-18 Dodge Journey CUV
- 2014-18 Dodge Durango SUV
- 2014-18 Jeep Cherokee SUV
- 2014-18 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV
- 2018 Jeep Wrangler
- 2014-19 Ram 1500 pickup
- 2014-18 Ram 2500 pickup
- 2014-18 Ram 3500 pickup
- 2014-18 Ram 3500 cab chassis
- 2014-18 Ram 4500/5500 cab chassis
The Fix: FCA will start notifying customers as early as next week to schedule service appointments. The Powertrain Control Module inside the cars will be fixed for free. Until the appointment, drivers should not use their vehicle’s cruise control system, FCA warns.
Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: The recall involves an estimated 4.8 million vehicles in the U.S. FCA is recalling additional vehicles in Canada, Mexico, and markets outside the NAFTA region.
