At the Geneva Motor Show today, Subaru revealed an aggressively styled wagon it calls the Viziv Tourer concept. With a boxer engine under the hood and all-wheel drive, Subaru says the Viziv Tourer “deliver[s] new value in a tourer form enabling drivers and passengers to fully savor the enjoyment of traveling by car.” That sounds nice enough, as does the promise of a next-generation EyeSight safety system, but what’s more important to us is the fact that Subaru might be showing us the next WRX wagon.
We’ve already seen Subaru’s vision of the next WRX sedan in the form of the Viziv Performance concept, and as the name suggests, the Viziv Performance STI concept previewed the WRX STI. But when Subaru redesigned the WRX for the 2015 model year, it dropped the five-door version from the lineup. Though previous generations received a wagon body style, the last liftgate-equipped WRX was more of a hatchback variant. The Viziv Tourer concept is the first hint we’ve gotten that the WRX wagon might make a comeback.
In photos, the Viziv Tourer’s proportions make it look large enough to possibly be the next Legacy or Outback, but we don’t think that’s the case despite fender cladding and what Subaru calls “a crossover mix of values.” Even though the Tourer is about 6 inches longer than the Viziv Performance, both concepts share a identical 107.5-inch wheelbase. To us, that suggests they’re meant to represent different versions of the same vehicle.
Sadly, it sounds like the next-generation WRX and STI are at least two-and-a-half years away, so even if the wagon is making a comeback, it will be a while before we know for sure. And as the current WRX showed, Subaru’s concepts tend to look a lot better than the production versions. Regardless of how it looks, though, having the option to buy a five-door WRX again can only be a good thing.
