2019 Hyundai Tucson First Look: Goodbye Turbocharger

The refreshed 2019 Hyundai Tucson makes its debut at the 2018 New York auto show with more power and additional active driver assist features. The updated compact crossover now sports Hyundai’s new cascading grille flanked by reshaped headlights. The 2019 Tucson’s lower front fascia has been updated too, featuring new fog lights, and the rear features revised  taillights. New 17-, 18-, and 19-inch alloy wheels will come standard depending on the trim level.

Despite this update being a mid-cycle refresh instead of a full redesign, the 2019 Hyundai Tucson’s interior got a major update. Replacing the outgoing car’s interior more horizontal layout is a floating touchscreen similar to the one found in recent Hyundai vehicles such as the Elantra GT, Kona, and Santa Fe. The more conventional instrument cluster features two analog gauges and a small display in between. Even the button layout on the center console has been changed thanks to the addition of an electronic parking brake that is standard on all models. The 2019 Tucson’s air vents have been changed and the leather seats have a new design.

Under the hood, the SE and Value grades will feature a 2.0-liter I-4 that’s estimated to make the same 164 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque as the outgoing base models.  SEL, Sport, and Limited models will have a 2.4-liter I-4 projected to generate 181 hp and 175 lb-ft, replacing the 175-hp, 195-lb-ft 1.6-liter turbo-four. A six-speed automatic transmission will be the only gearbox available on the 2019 Tucson, as the seven-speed dual-clutch unit will no longer be offered.

All 2019 Tucsons will come standard with a 7.0-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, and lane keeping assist. Available options include automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, a multi-camera Around View Monitor system, driver attention warning, wireless phone charging, a rear-seat USB port for charging, and rain-sensing wipers.

When it goes on sale this fall, the refreshed 2019 Tucson will be the fifth new or significantly revised crossover Hyundai is introducing by 2020. One of those yet-to-be-introduced models is an all-new three-row model with seating for up to eight passengers that will slot above the 2019 Santa Fe.
