2019 Range Rover SV Coupe is All Sport and Not Much Utility

Move over, 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe—there’s a new two-door, full-size SUV on the market. In a push to meet the needs of seemingly every nook and cranny of the SUV market, Range Rover unveiled the new Range Rover SV Coupe. With supercharged V-8 power and an astronomical price tag, this limited-edition Range is the perfect garage companion for your blacked-out Rolls-Royce Wraith.

Seemingly based on the full-size Range Rover platform, the coupe lops off the rear passenger doors and smooths out the bodywork, creating a new two-row, four-seat layout. According to the automaker, everything aside from the hood and lower tailgate is all-new.  Absurdity aside, it’s a sharp looking SUV, with a rakish, backswept design. However, if you’re hoping to impress passersby, you’re going to have to paint (or wrap) it in a wild color to attract attention, as the coupe’s pseudo-subtle looks will struggle to step from the fleet of black four-door Ranges that pack the lots of ritzy eateries.

Motivating the fresh sheetmetal is the familiar 5.0-liter supercharged V-8, spitting out 557 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. Power is routed to all-four-wheels through the standard eight-speed automatic transmission, returning a stellar 0-60 mph sprint in just 5.0 seconds and a top speed of 165 mph,  more than enough to shame the SVAutobiography owners down at the golf club.

Inside, the cockpit is reworked to fit the exclusive nature of the coupe. Buyers have the choice of four different two-tone colorways fitted with special leather and trim not available anywhere else in the Land Rover/Range Rover lineup. Other than the higher-spec materials, it’s Range Rover as usual, with a wide range of luxurious amenities and infotainment features.

There isn’t necessarily a massive market for a pricey full-size two-door SUV, so Range is playing it safe with a limited production run. Just 999 of these amalgamations will be “hand-assembled” at the SVO Technical center in Warwickshire, UK. When a portion of that production is allotted to the U.S., expect to pay a hefty $295,995 for the honor. The 2019 Range Rover SV Coupe will make landfall on our shores later this year.
