CARB Document Suggests 2019 Camaro Will Get a Seven-Speed Manual

Due to the fact that U.S. car buyers overwhelmingly prefer automatics, the number of cars that still offer a manual transmission is dwindling. Even if you’re shopping for a performance car, there’s no guarantee a manual will be an option. But as an increasing number of automakers are throwing in the towel on the clutch pedal, it looks like Chevrolet is set to give Camaro buyers their choice of two manual transmissions.

Two days ago, General Motors filed an emissions certification document for its 6.2-liter V-8 with the California Air Resources Board. That isn’t notable on its own, but as AutoGuide discovered, the last page includes a chart that suggests the 2019 Camaro will get the Corvette’s seven-speed manual. But it’s not replacing the six-speed manual, either. Both are listed as options alongside the eight-speed automatic.

If we wanted to get nit-picky, we’d point out that the skip-shift feature on the Corvette’s seven-speed manual can be annoying, but that’s why God created the skip-shift eliminator kit. And in a world where so few performance cars can be had with a stick shift, we’re certainly not going to turn our noses up at Chevrolet offering the Camaro with two manual options. You can also expect to see an extra MPG or two if you choose the seven-speed over the six-speed.

Sadly, there’s no way to tell from this document which trim will offer which transmission. But when this year’s New York auto show rolls around, don’t be surprised if Chevrolet announces that the 2019 Camaro will get an optional seven-speed manual.
