Zagato Reveals IsoRivolta Vision Gran Turismo

Italian coachbuilder Zagato revealed a new car today called the IsoRivolta Vision Gran Turismo. Except it wasn’t designed for the road. Instead, it was designed for Sony’s racing video game, “Gran Turismo Sport.” Zagato calls this car a tribute to IsoRivolta, the reincarnated Italian automaker now run by its founder’s son.

“It is a design that has grit but is still beautiful. I think that’s what really makes the IsoRivolta Vision Gran Turismo a Zagato. It carries the heritage of the brand with design cues such as the double bubble roof, dual humps that are signature to the Milan design house,” said Kazunori Yamauchi, President of Polyphony Digital Inc., the game’s developer.

But while it was designed for a video game, the real-world IsoRivolta concept gets an actual chassis and powertrain. Zagato says the chassis is bespoke, but the twin-turbocharged 6.2-liter V-8 is borrowed from a Callaway Corvette and comes mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Making 997 hp, the rear-wheel-drive IsoRivolta can hit 62 mph in a very quick 2.7 seconds, the Italian coachbuilder claims. It also has a top speed of 227 mph and weighs only 2,489 pounds.

But if it’s just a car for a video game, why bother using a real-world powertrain developed by a well-known Corvette tuner? Why not give it something more exotic? Well, Iso has a history of using American engines in its cars, so it’s only fitting that the tribute would stay the same even in a video game. But Zagato also plans to build a few real examples of the IsoRivolta.

Yes, you read that right. A car designed for a video game will be turned into a physical car that a few lucky buyers will be able to drive on real roads. Sadly, by “a few,” we mean very, very few. Zagato says it intends to build no more than five IsoRivoltas. Possibly as few as three.

Pricing has yet to be announced, but this is definitely one of those situations where if you have to ask, you probably can’t afford it.
