Suzuki might not sell vehicles in the U.S. anymore, but the Japanese automaker is a big player in the rest of the world. After attending the Tokyo Motor Show and seeing the lineup of cool new small concept cars on tap, we can see why.
Seriously, who wouldn’t want the Suzuki e-Survivor that looks like a dune buggy but has a perfectly respectable ladder frame, lightweight body, and four-wheel drive making it safe on-road and awesome off-road?
Suzuki President Toshihiro Suzuki calls it the compact SUV of the future—like the Jimny but reinvented as an electric vehicle for the next-generation of SUVs. It has an electric motor in each wheel, an open top, and clear doors.
Sharing the Tokyo stage is the Spacia concept, a tiny but tall wagon. Think micro Scion xB. It has a low floor, sliding doors, and lots of space. It also has the ability to brake in reverse when an object is detected. Future minicars need greater safety, Suzuki said. He also showed a variant called the Spacia Custom concept.
And the final leg of this funky minicar stool is the XBee, pronounced ”cross-bee” and described as a CUV wagon. It looks like a Toyota FJ Cruiser or a mini Mini.
The XBee is shown in standard, Outdoor Adventure, or Street Adventure. An unexpected touch on the XBee Outdoor Adventure is the wood panel on the lower part of the side body panels. It has a direct injection turbocharged engine “to enhance outdoor fun-ness,” Suzuki explained.
The Spacia and XBee are coming soon, Suzuki said. Just not for us.
