Henrik Fisker’s EMotion EV Will Make Public Debut at CES 2018

While Henrik Fisker used to be known for designing cars like the Aston Martin DB9 and BMW Z8, in the last few years those achievements have been overshadowed by the disaster that was the Fisker Karma. Not willing to give up, Fisker is back with a new company, this time called Fisker, Inc. The first car it plans to sell will be called the EMotion, a $129,000 electric car with a 400-mile range, an alien face, and suicide-butterfly doors. And it looks like we’ll get to see it in January.

Henrik Fisker told TheStreet that he intends to show off the EMotion at next year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES). And while it isn’t scheduled to go into production until 2019, Fisker says the EMotion’s next-generation battery technology will be ready to demonstrate in time for the show. Supposedly, he’s figured out a way to get a 125-mile charge in only 9 minutes. If the technology actually works, it would be a huge step forward for electric vehicles. But that’s a huge “if.”

Fisker says he’s also developing an affordable version of the EMotion. His target price is $34,000 before tax credits, which is conveniently $1,000 less than the base price of the Tesla Model 3. Whether that car will get the EMotion’s aluminum and carbon fiber construction, quick-charging battery, and semi-autonomous driving technology, he didn’t say. Despite the natural comparison, Fisker made it clear he isn’t specifically targeting Tesla.

“I don’t think anyone is out to kill anybody,” he told TheStreet. “Tesla doesn’t really have a competitor. It doesn’t look like one is going to emerge. I think it’s time to move to a next level of this technology and I believe that we have come up with some real breakthroughs.”

Considering the extreme claims he’s making, we’re going to remain skeptical. But if these breakthroughs are legitimate, look for a demonstration on either January 7 or 8 of next year.
