Brabus, the northern German tuner, just might be one of the busiest companies at the Frankfurt show. The firm not only will bring examples of its hotted-up Jaguars and a Land Rover Defender—while it’s most known for its work on Mercedes models, Brabus fiddles with JLR products, too—but also plans to show off its take on the sultry Mercedes-AMG GT S.
-The first fully in-house engineered AMG car, the GT S is no slouch, packing 503 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque, and it’s capable of exceeding 190 mph. (The lesser AMG GT version, which we expect to get later, has 468 horses and 440 lb-ft.) If that isn’t enticing enough, Brabus has applied its PowerXtra B40-600 plug-in module, which alters the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8’s ignition timing, fuel injection, and turbocharger boost to deliver for 591 horsepower and 553 lb-ft. It’s the same package Brabus applied to the insane C63 sedan it’s showing at Frankfurt, too. (Not crazy enough? Consider that the tuner also will be showing an 850-hp G-wagen.)
-The fiddling also allows the car to break the 200-mph barrier, with top speed now sitting at 201—perfect for the autobahn, or say, Australia’s Stuart Highway in the Northern Territory. “You can never have enough power, especially in a sports car,” Brabus says, somewhat unnecessarily. Brabus claims the car’s 0-to-62-mph time drops to 3.6 seconds, which strikes us as a wee bit pessimistic considering we ran the AMG-standard S to 60 in three seconds flat.
- -Other alterations include a titanium active exhaust system capped by four titanium and carbon-fiber tailpipes. Brabus claims it slices some 40 percent from the weight of the standard exhaust and that it adjusts to be both quieter and louder than the factory setup depending on the setting. At the other end of the car, more carbon-fiber elements on the front end are said to reduce lift at the front axle and there are restyled air outlets in the front fenders. The sill extensions, rear diffuser, and spoiler are Brabus specials, too.

Finally, the car has Brabus’s own forged, 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels, as well as suspension tweaks that drop the car by 0.6 inch (allegedly to cope with the higher speeds but realistically to justify the higher spend). Continental, Pirelli or Yokohama rubber is available in size 275/30 up front and 305/25 at the rear. Covered by a three-year, 62,000-mile warranty, the car will also be available with a fully customized interior.
