Over the last few years, Mercedes-Benz design has experienced a remarkable turnaround. After the boxy and ungainly models of the Peter Pfeiffer era, Gorden Wagener has brought in a lot of talent—and the result is cars like the well-regarded new S-class coupe. The Concept IAA, which Daimler is teasing on social media today, presents the next opportunity to take a step forward. It will be unveiled at the Frankfurt auto show next week.

It’s touted as “an aerodynamics world champion and a four-door coupé with embodying irresistible design.” We see a bit of Audi A7 in the new concept’s silhouette—perhaps even a hint of the Alfa Romeo Alfetta GTV in its tail.

Far more than a mere styling exercise, the concept hints at the next-generation Mercedes-Benz CLS four-door coupe, which will be based on the upcoming new E-class. But there is still some time before we see the real thing: Whereas the E-class will bow at the Detroit auto show in January, the CLS will take significantly longer to arrive.
-In the meantime, we look forward to seeing more of this concept next week.
