Sergio Marchionne in March of this year proposed a merger of Fiat-Chrysler and General Motors, the New York Times reported in a recent profile of Marchionne. The mercurial FCA chief made his overture in an e-mail he sent directly to GM’s Mary Barra, but no meeting on the subject ever took place. “The e-mail must have gone into my spam folder,” Barra said.
-We made that last part up. What Barra really said is that a merger would be a “distraction” for GM. Marchionne’s request for a meeting was rejected. Marchionne, however, seems undeterred. In a conference call with industry analysts, he reiterated what he sees as the industry’s need for consolidation, to limit duplication and achieve cost savings.
