2016 Chevy Cruze Spied: Here’s What to Expect

2016 Chevy Cruze (spy photo)

What It Is: The next-generation compact sedan for Chevrolet. Like the next-gen Buick Verano, the American-spec Cruze appears to have a very low nose and a high rear deck. The shape itself is rather nondescript—it’s just as easy to imagine a Dodge Dart or Hyundai Elantra hiding under that camouflage—but we know it’s the Chevy on account of the wheel centers and the spot in the grille where the bow tie will go. 2016 Fiat 500X Starts At $20,900

500x

Hot off the heels of a rousing TV spot during Sunday's Super Bowl XLIX game, Fiat announced today the all-new 500X small SUV will start at $20,900, including a destination fee, when it goes on sale later this year. The 500X is one of the more mainstream cars we've seen from Fiat since its return to the U.S. market. It will likely appeal to a much broader audience than the brand's other models thanks to the 500X's compact crossover shape and available all-wheel drive.

The 500X is a player in a segment of small SUVs that seemingly popped up out of nowhere [no pun intended, seriously], including the Honda HR-V (pricing TBA), Chevrolet Trax ($20,995) and Jeep Renegade ($18,990). Fiat's tiny ute is available in five trim levels ranging from the entry-level Pop to the $28,000 Trekking Plus. Continue below for more trim level pricing.

Fiat 500X trim levels:

Pop: $20,900

Easy: $23,200

Trekking: $24,000

Lounge: $26,750

Trekking Plus: $28,000

All-wheel drive is available on four of the five trim levels as a $1,900 option; Pop trims are front-wheel drive only. The entry-level Pop trim level is also the only one with a manual transmission and turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine, which pair together exclusively. A 2.4-liter four-cylinder and nine-speed automatic transmission are available for $1,500 and are the standard engine and transmission on all other trim levels.

Government Forces New Airbag Recall that Affects 2.12 Million Vehicles

Airbag

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is recalling more than 2 million vehicles to fix a defect it says was not properly remedied under a previous recall. Airbags can inadvertently deploy in 2.12 million Acura, Dodge, Jeep, Honda, Pontiac and Toyota vehicles, increasing the risk of an injury.

NHTSA says this campaign will provide owners with a new remedy after the manufacturers' original attempts to fix the defects proved ineffective.

Approximately 374,200 Honda vehicles are affected:

  • Model-year 2003-04 Odyssey minivans manufactured Feb. 13, 2002, to Aug. 13, 2004

  • Model-year 2003 Acura MDX SUVs manufactured Feb. 21, 2002, to Sept. 23, 2003

Approximately 753,200 vehicles from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles are affected:

  • Model-year 2002-03 Jeep Liberty SUVs manufactured Jan. 9, 2001, to March 28, 2003

  • Model-year 2002-04 Jeep Cherokee SUVs manufactured Feb. 13, 2001, to May 23, 2003

  • Model-year 2003-04 Dodge Viper sports cars manufactured Nov. 1, 2001, to June 30, 2004

Approximately 1.2 million Toyota vehicles are affected:

  • Model-year 2003-04 Toyota Corolla sedans manufactured Dec. 28, 2001, to May 2, 2004

  • Model-year 2003-04 Matrix hatchbacks manufactured Jan. 6, 2002, to April 29, 2004; the related 2003-04 Pontiac Vibe hatchback is also being recalled

  • Model-year 2003-04 Avalon sedans manufactured June 5, 2002, to Dec. 20, 2004

NHTSA says that in these vehicles, an airbag control module component made by supplier TRW could fail, causing the front airbags, side airbags, and/or seat belt pretensioners to suddenly deploy while the vehicle is being driven. Many of these vehicles have already been fixed under a previous campaign, but NHTSA says it's identified about 40 vehicles in which airbags deployed unexpectedly after receiving the original remedy.

What's more, about 1 million Toyota and Honda vehicles involved in this recall are also involved in the Takata airbag recall; the defective Takata airbags could deploy with enough force to cause injury or death to vehicle occupants. NHTSA is urging consumers to take these safety campaigns seriously.

Dealers will replace the airbag control module and front- and/or side-impact sensors for free, but the parts aren't currently available. In the meantime, dealers will perform an interim repair. NHTSA says the repair reduces the risk of an inadvertent deployment; the parts for the permanent fix will not be available until late 2015.

"This is unfortunately a complicated issue for consumers, who may have to return to their dealer more than once. But this is an urgent safety issue, and all consumers with vehicles covered by the previous recalls should have that remedy installed. Even though it's a temporary solution until the new remedy is available, they and their families will be safer if they take the time to learn if their vehicle is covered and follow their manufacturers' instructions. A hassle is much better than a family tragedy," NHTSA Administrator Mark Rosekind said in a statement.

Consumers with questions can call NHTSA's Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236; Chrysler,800-853-1403; Toyota, 800-331-4331; or Honda, 800-999-1009.

2015 Kia Sedona Review

"The redesigned 2015 Kia Sedona is a well-executed family-hauler that will keep Mom, Dad and the rug rats comfortable and entertained; while it's leaps and bounds ahead of its predecessor, though, it doesn't quite leapfrog its competitors," says Cars.com reviewer Jennifer Geiger.

Recall Alert: 2014-2015 Volkswagen Sedans and Hatchbacks

2015-vw-jetta

Vehicles Affected: Approximately 44,660 model-year 2014-15 Volkswagen Jetta sedans manufactured between March 28 and Nov. 24, 2014; model-year 2014-15 Passat sedans manufactured between April 7 and Nov. 18, 2014; model-year 2015 Golf and GTI hatchbacks manufactured between July 1 and Nov. 20, 2014; and model-year 2014-2015 Beetle hatchbacks and convertibles manufactured between March 31 and Nov. 27, 2014. This is an expansion of an earlier Volkswagen recall.

The Problem: A sealing cap at the fueling rail may fail and allow fuel to leak into the engine compartment; in the presence of an ignition source this increases the risk of a fire.

The Fix: Volkswagen will be notifying owners in early February, and dealers will replace the fuel rails free of charge.

What Owners Should Do: Owners can call Volkswagen at 800-822-8987 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at 888-327-4236 for more information.
