GM Files Trademark for Bolt EUV, Hinting at Possible New Crossover

General Motors plans to launch at least 20 new electric vehicles by 2023, and it makes sense the automaker would leverage the existing Bolt to achieve this goal. Apparently, GM has been mulling over the possibility of a new vehicle named the Bolt EUV.

GM filed a trademark application for “Bolt EUV” on April 9, as GM Authority reports. The trademark filing confirms the name will be used for “motor land vehicles, namely, automobiles.” Although we can’t be sure, it stands to reason that EUV is short for “Electric Utility Vehicle.” If that’s correct, GM must be thinking of a crossover or SUV version of the small Bolt hatch.

Last month, we learned that GM was investing $300 million in the Orion assembly plant in Michigan to build a new Chevrolet electric vehicle that shares the same platform as the Bolt. The automaker didn’t specify the name or body style of the new vehicle, however. It also stopped short of giving a timeline for the new model. This plant produces the Bolt, as well as Cruise autonomous test vehicles.

We don’t know if the Bolt EUV is the mystery model planned for the Orion plant. But we do know that GM has already begun announcing new electric vehicles, including the Buick Velite 6 EV for China. In the coming years, with reports hinting at 2021, GM will introduce a new EV platform that will accommodate various body styles and front-, rear-, and all-wheel-drive configurations. A Cadillac will be the first vehicle to receive this new flexible architecture.
