30 Cars You May Not Be Able to Buy if the U.S.-Mexico Border is Shut Down

Last week, President Trump said in a series of tweets that, “If Mexico doesn’t immediately stop ALL illegal immigration coming into the United States throug [sic] our Southern Border, I will be CLOSING the Border, or large sections of the Border, next week.” He then claimed, “we lose so much money with them, especially when you add in drug trafficking etc.) [sic], that the Border closing would be a good thing!” And while he appeared to soften his stance a bit on Tuesday, the president still sounds committed to following through.

But as experts were quick to point out, in addition to causing other types of economic disruption, such a decision would likely be devastating for the U.S. auto industry. Almost every vehicle sold in the U.S. uses parts that were originally manufactured in Mexico. According to one economist, the ripple effect would likely shut down U.S. car production within a week. And if automotive components can’t cross the border, it’s unlikely Mexican-built vehicles would make it through. It’s widely known that some automakers have factories in Mexico, but the list of vehicles built in Mexico is even longer than you might think.

Yes, dealers typically have a multi-week supply on hand for any given vehicle, but depending how long it lasts, a border shutdown would quickly cut off or severely limit inventory for a number of cars. Here are 30 Mexican-made vehicles that could be affected, according to data from Mexico’s Instituto Nacional de Estadística, Geografía e Informática.
