After BMW introduced the wonderful, 365-hp M2 coupe, the German automaker built something even better for 2019—the 405-hp M2 Competition. That involved adding all sorts of parts from the M3 and M4, including the M3’s engine. And yet, despite the M2 Competition feeling more at home on the track than ever before, it also remained comfortable enough to use as a daily driver. But from the looks of it, BMW is about to release an even more hardcore version of the M2.
Our spy photographer caught this prototype, which could be an M2 CS, refueling at a gas station. And based on the amount of snow packed into the grille, it looks like BMW’s drivers ran into quite a bit of snow while they conducted their cold-weather tests. You can also see a more aggressive front bumper with a larger splitter and a sculpted hood with what appears to be a more pronounced bulge than the one you get on the current M2 Competition.
Farther back, the fenders look like they have even wider flares than the M2 Competition’s. The trunk lid spoiler has grown larger, as well. Plus, while the quad exhaust looks relatively unchanged, BMW has added a more aggressive rear diffuser. Our photographer said this particular car had a manual transmission, but they believe a dual-clutch will be an option. They also believe the CS will get a standard carbon-fiber roof and an engine tuned to make more than 450 hp.
The good news is, it sounds like we won’t have to wait long to confirm these details. From what we’ve heard, BMW plans to reveal the M2 CS later this year. That could mean we’ll see it at the New York auto show next month, but we suspect a Frankfurt reveal is more likely.
