How Would You Spec Your Ideal 2018 Jeep Wrangler?

Any time Jeep launches a new Wrangler, it’s exciting, and the 2018 Wrangler is no exception. We’ve already gotten a chance to drive the JL Wrangler, and we can confidently say it’s fantastic. But while it will still be a while before you can actually buy the new Wrangler, Jeep did put the configurator up on its website. That means you’re free to window shop, playing around until you finally get your perfect Wrangler configured.

First, you have to choose which model you want. There are four basic versions, the Sport, Sport S, Sahara, and Rubicon, but the Sahara only comes in four-door form. The rest can still be ordered as two-doors if you’d like. Sadly, the naturally aspirated V-6 is the only engine option available at the moment, so if you’re hoping for a turbo-four or diesel Wrangler, you’re out of luck for now. It does, however, look like you can still order every variant with a manual transmission if you’d like. The eight-speed automatic is a $2,000 option.

Mechanical options depend partly on what model you choose. For example, if you want Jeep’s anti-spin differential rear axle, you can add it to even the base Sport. But if you want Selec-Trac full-time four-wheel drive, it’s not available unless you bump up to the Sahara. And while the Rubicon gets a 4.10:1 gear ratio, it’s the only version that does. The rest get a 3.45:1 gear ratio.

Inside, there are quite a few options to choose from, at least as long as you don’t pick the Sport. We recommend at least adding the Technology Group, if only for access to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There’s also a towing option, a cold-weather package that includes remote start, and a safety package that includes parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. On the Rubicon, you can also add an LED lighting package that includes daytime running lights.

There are also five different options for tops, two different wheels, and the option to add body-color fenders. Plus, if you’re feeling extra fancy, you can add keyless entry and an Alpine audio system.

Options may change when other engines become available, but at least for now, the cheapest two-door Wrangler Sport the configurator would let us build came out to $28,190 after adding the $1,195 destination charge. A fully loaded four-door Rubicon, on the other hand, came out to $56,110, meaning it costs only slightly less than twice what the base model does.

Of course, you can always save $30 on that loaded Rubicon if you can do without the cigarette lighter and removable ashtray.
