-Overview: Now that the rear-drive FR-S has had its brief moment, the tC coupe resumes the role of bestselling Scion, a position it has occupied for most of the brand’s 11-model-year life. An affordable two-door hatchback coupe sits squarely on-target for this youth-oriented brand that Toyota still refers to as its “test laboratory division.” (Its latest lab experiment is to let Mazda build Scion’s first sedan.) The tC was last fully redesigned in 2011, so we’ve sampled a 2015 model to see how it fares against fresher contenders. As of this writing, the tC is one of our lower-ranked compact cars, most of which are four-door sedans. Alternatives among sporty-leaning two-doors include the Honda Civic coupe and the Kia Forte Koup, plus Hyundai’s asymmetrical, three-door Veloster. The tC’s 179-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder pairs with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. That choice pretty much defines the two-car model range, but there’s a long options list including a Fast & Furious freak’s fantasy array of TRD Performance parts (brakes, intake, exhaust, suspension, and more).
