Report: EPA Wants VW to Build EVs in U.S. as Punishment for Dieselgate

A new report from the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag states that the EPA has asked Volkswagen to manufacture electric vehicles at its Chattanooga, Tenn., plant to make up for the emissions scandal that affects 11 million cars worldwide. The automaker is currently in talks with the EPA with the aim of finding a fix that both parties can agree upon for nearly 60,000 diesel-powered vehicles than exceed pollution limits by as much as 40 times.

In addition to building electric cars, Welt am Sonntag says that Volkswagen was asked to help build a network of charging stations in the U.S. However, the newspaper gave no source for its report and it wasn’t clear whether the EPA was asking the automaker to build existing electric vehicles or new models at its Chattanooga plant. Five months after the news of Volkswagen’s emissions cheating broke, the automaker has yet to find a fix and is now facing a growing number of lawsuits.

Alexander Dobrindt, Germany’s transport minister, recently met with Volkswagen’s chairman of the supervisory board Hans Dieter Poetsch on February 16 to give an update on the automaker’s progress in solving the diesel emissions issue. No details on that meeting have emerged.

Volkswagen will present a final report regarding the diesel emissions issue to the Jones Day law firm in April.
