2017 Mercedes-AMG GLC43 Revealed Ahead of New York Debut

Mercedes-AMG has revealed the 2017 GLC43 ahead of its official unveiling at the 2016 New York auto show. The GLC 43 is the first AMG model in the GLC-Class lineup and will slot above the GLC300 and offer superior performance and handling thanks to extensive changes to the car’s suspension and all-wheel drive system, as well as a new twin-turbo V-6.

Powering the 2017 Mercedes-AMG GLC43 is a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 rated at 362 hp and 384 lb-ft of torque, the same unit found in the GLE450, SLC43, C43, and C450. Handling gear changes is a tuned nine-speed automatic transmission that’s been programmed to shift quicker and features a double-declutching function for faster downshifts in Sport Plus mode.

Five transmission modes can be chosen via the AMG Dynamic Select system, Eco, Comfort, Sport, Sport Plus, and Individual modes. Eco mode activates the GLC43’s start/stop function for improved gas mileage. A sail mode disengages the clutch and reduces engine speed to idle for better fuel economy. Sport and Sport Plus modes are tuned for enthusiastic driving and activates the transmission’s double-declutching feature for shorter shift times. Finally, Individual mode allows the driver to customize the car’s powertrain response.

The GLC43 also gains a rear-biased all-wheel drive system tuned by AMG with a torque distribution of 31/69 percent front to rear. A three-stage electronic stability control system has also been added along with a uniquely tuned sport air suspension with adaptive damping. The adaptive damping system features three modes, Comfort, Sport, and Sport Plus, allowing the driver to tailor the car’s ride and handling characteristics to his/her liking. Larger 14.2-inch front and 12.6-inch rear brakes help improve the GLC43’s stopping performance.

Design cues that distinguish the GLC43 from the standard GLC300 include a diamond radiator grille with chrome-plated pins, larger front air intakes, and a silver chrome front splitter. Standard on the 2017 GLC43 are staggered 20-inch alloy wheels and quad exhaust tips. Inside, the car features a flat-bottom steering wheel with red contrast topstitching, and sport seats with improved lateral support. Two 5.5-inch diagonal instrument clusters put all important information in the driver’s view while an Eco display helps you drive more efficiently. Optional extras include performance seats and an AMG Night package that includes two-tone 21-inch alloy wheels.
